Dog Diarrhea: Get Your Dog’s Poo Solid Again

Updated: Sep 12, 2020

If you have a canine family member, chances are you’ve experienced the joys of diarrhea at some point or another in their lives.

The Scoop on Poop

Diarrhea can be caused by several things, including dietary allergies, stress, some types of parasites, pancreatic disease, inflammatory bowel, and other diseases etc. Because of the numerous possible causes, there may be different methods of treatment depending on the specific case. Diarrhea can become chronic and might then take several weeks to find the underlaying cause, and an effective treatment. Remember to always consult with your veterinarian first, and have your dog see a vet immediately if there are other symptoms such as blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy etc.

Though the traditional diet recommendation for dogs with diarrhea is cooked white rice and chicken, I have found a trick to resolving messy poops fast! So for the regular tummy/digestive tract upset here’s something you can do at home for your pooch.

My life saver or should I say poop saver is a digestive aid called Honest Kitchen Perfect Form, I use it in combination with a mixture of 50% cooked ground turkey or cooked ground chicken and 50% pumpkin puree. I have discovered that by leaving the rice out of the mix and using Perfect Form by Honest Kitchen it actually resolves diarrhea from tummy upsets much faster than the traditional white rice and chicken diet. There’s also some science behind why leaving out the rice is best. When comparing a dog’s digestive tract to a human’s digestive tract, you’ll find that a dog’s is much shorter than a humans. This allows them to digest meat much quicker than humans. But when a dog comes down with diarrhea, their digestive system processes food even faster than usual. This means that foods like rice that while may normally be easily digested won’t stay in the inflamed intestinal tract long enough to be formed into the correct stool consistency.

Although feeding your dog rice may not harm Fido, it also won’t necessarily help to get rid of that diarrhea and in some cases it can prolong the GI upset. A daily supplement to add to your pup’s diet especially if they are on a dry kibble is enzymes, and pre & probiotics! Enzymes are essential to optimal digestion and they aren’t found in dry dog foods because they get killed during the baking and drying process during dog food production. Enzymes and probiotics can play an important role in getting and keeping your dog’s digestive tract functioning at its best.

Bring the runs to an end
